Contraindications

Do not use if your pet is pregnant, nursing or suffer from liver dysfunction. Do not use if your pet is sensitive or allergic to caffeine as it can cause insomnia, anxiety, irritability, upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, or frequent urination in some animals. Green tea contains small amounts of vitamin K, which can make anticoagulant drugs, such as warfarin, less effective.

Drug Interactions

Quinolone antibiotics interact with Green Tea. Some antibiotics that decrease how quickly the body breaks down caffeine include ciprofloxacin (Cipro), enoxacin (Penetrex), norfloxacin (Chibroxin, Noroxin), sparfloxacin (Zagam), trovafloxacin (Trovan), and grepafloxacin (Raxar).

The EGCG and other polyphenols in green tea can inhibit the therapeutic effect of bortezomib (Velcade(R)) and other boronic acid based proteasome inhibitors (37). Cimetidine (Tagamet) interacts with Green Tea. The caffeine content in green tea may inhibit the hemodynamic effects of adenosine (18). The tannin content in green tea may reduce the absorption of atropine and codeine. Caffeine in green tea may increase PT / PTT.

Possible interactions with adenosine, Beta-lactam, Benzodiazepines, Beta-blockers, Propranolol and Metoprolo, Blood thinners such as Coumadin, chemotherapy medications such as doxorubicin and tamoxifen, Clozapine (Clozaril), Ephedrine, Lithium, MAOI's including Isocarboxazid (Marplan). Moclobemide, (Manerix), Phenelzine (Nardil) and Tranylcypromine (Parnate) and Phenylpropanolamine, acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Carbamazepine (Tegretol), Dipyridamole (Persatine), estrogen, Fluvoxamine (Luvox), Methotrexate, Mexiletine (Mexitil), Phenobarbital, Theophylline and Verapamil (Bosoptin, Calan, Covera- HS, Verelan, Verelan PM.

Cautions 

May cause insomnia and nausea. Tannins may reduce absorption and bioavailability of codeine, atropine, and iron supplements. Use caution if your pet has peptic ulcers because it can stimulate the production of gastric acid. If your pet is anemic, green tea may worsen the condition. Green tea contains caffeine which might increase the risk of bleeding if your pet has ulcers or is scheduled for surgery. Talk to your Vet before administering green tea to a dog/cat with a bleeding disorder. Caffeine in green tea might cause irregular heartbeat.

Dosage

Dogs and cats up to 12 pounds: 1 capsule, one time daily. Dogs and cats 13-25 pounds: 1 capsule, two times daily. Dogs and cats 26-50 pounds: 2 capsules, two times daily.

Dogs 51-75 pounds: 3 capsules, two times daily

Dogs 76+ pounds: 4 capsules, two times daily.
